A memory of John from Lucy

Created by Lucy 3 years ago

Eileen and I shared a flat for several years in London in the 90's. i remember John and Margaret visiting sometimes and always remember the fun and kindness they brought with them. I remember John being made voluntarily redundant (I think I've got that right) from a very long serving job a few months before his official retirement age, and being told he could not claim any money from the DHSS unless he could show he was actively searching for a job. So... the hunt was on. Amongst applying to to be a BA pilot and various other dream jobs, we helped him put together an application for conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. He received a very polite letter from them explaining that he probably needed to build his conducting experience a little before he would be considered - but the mission was accomplished. He took the LSO headed letter into the job centre and claimed his payment. I think the LSO would have absolutely loved him!

I also remember how proud he was to carry the flame for the Olympic path and for CF. Lovely to see a picture of that, and of all the family. My love to you all, but especially Eileen, Ivan, Finn, Edwin and Margaret. You carry his flame in you. I remember him with such a grin on my face. xxx
